Actions That Signal Where Home Really Is (Driver’s License to Bank Accounts)

States can’t see your intentions, so they judge your domicile by what you do. Each of the actions below is a piece of evidence. None decides the question alone, but together they tell a story, and you want that story to point clearly to one state.

  1. Your primary home. Where you live most of the time, and how it compares in size, value and use to any other home you keep. Downsizing to a small condo while keeping the big family house in the old state sends a mixed message.
  2. Your driver’s license. Get one in your new state promptly and give up the old one. It’s simple, cheap and one of the first things an auditor checks.
  3. Vehicle registration. Register and insure your cars where you live. A car registered in your old state is a loose end.
  4. Voter registration. Register in your new state, cancel the old registration and vote where you live. Voting records are public and easy to check.
  5. Declaration of domicile or homestead. Some states let you formally declare domicile or claim a homestead property tax exemption on your primary home. These are strong, dated signals.
  6. Banking and financial accounts. Move your primary checking, safe deposit box and day-to-day banking to local institutions, and update your address on brokerage and retirement accounts.
  7. Where you work. Where your office is, where you meet clients and where you actually do the work. For founders and consultants, this can be the hardest factor to manage.
  8. Professional relationships. Doctors, dentists, accountants, lawyers. If all your appointments are still in the old state, it suggests you still live there.
  9. Community ties. Clubs, religious congregations, gyms, charities and volunteer work. Join locally, and resign from or downgrade memberships back home where you can.
  10. Where your family and treasured things are. Where your spouse and children live, and where you keep the items that matter most: photos, heirlooms, art, pets.

Timing and records matter as much as the actions

An auditor will ask when you did each of these things. Changing your license two weeks after moving looks very different from changing it two years later. Keep the paperwork: the license issue date, registration receipts, the homestead filing, the letter closing an old account.

Keep score

Domigo tracks each of these residency-establishing actions alongside your day count. Its readiness score shows how complete your case is, and which loose ends to tie up, long before anyone asks.
